More casualties at SUZO as Red Cross personnel raced to save lives

The record attendance at the just ended super zonals of the Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges athletics competition resulted in a number of casualties at the Baba Yara Stadium last week.

Many concerns have been raised about the inadequacy of security at the stadium which is a contributing factor to the many casualties recorded at the two day event.

The Red Cross personnel at the stadium were kept busy through out the event as many students were hurled on stretchers for treatment of various degrees from suffocation through to passing out.  Many of the students who could not stand the heat and suffocation collapsed and needed medical attention for revival.

Other students were stampede at the gates as they struggled to gain entry into the stadium. In one instance,  a frustrated security person injured some students in his bid to restore order at the gate.

Red Cross personnel had to intervene quickly as students were rushed out from the crowd due to suffocation.

Perhaps the sports federation of the Ashanti school sports ought to check the attendance again to minimize the number of students entering the stadium and consequently reduce the number of casualties.
