2016 SUZO: Record Attendance at Baba Yara as over 45,000 watch Day-1, More than 20,000 unable to enter
There was a record attendance at the Baba Yara Stadium in day one of the Ashanti Regional Super Zonals of the schools and colleges athletics competition as thousands of students and athletics lovers crowded at the Baba Yara stadium to witness the event.
Over 45, 000 people crowded at the stadium by noon time as thousands still waited at the gates waiting to come in. The stampede and commotion behind the gates resulted in some injuries to some students who got hurt in the bid of the security personnel to restore order at the gates as many people tried to force their way through the entrances.
More than half the capacity at the stadium could not gain entry into the stadium as the Baba Yara was full to capacity with stadium authorities unwilling to accept more to avoid any disaster.
In the full glare of the Chairman of the National Sports Authority and the Ghana Athletics Association President Prof. Duodu who were both present at the stadium, i guess they would be asking themselves how come senior high school athletics can attract more than 50,000 spectators and yet national athletics events hardly appeals to anyone.
